Summary: Within the context of the one thousand years since Saint Symeon the New Theologian departed to the Lord (†1022) and the three hundred years since Saint Paisios of Neamț was born (1722), the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church proclaimed the year 2022 as the commemorative year of the hesychastic saints Symeon the New Theologian, Gregory Palamas and Paisios of Neamț, laying stress upon the prayer as spiritual experience of living the presence of God within man’s heart and the communion with Him[…]. The names of these three great hesychastic saints, who are being commemorated during this year, 2022, are connected with three periods of spiritual reinvigorations renewal of the history of the Church. Saint Symeon the New Theologian (949-1022), a great innovator of the monastic spiritual life, points up in his writings the importance of viewing the uncreated light of the divine glory, as a work of the grace, the repentance and the ceaseless prayer within the spiritual life […]. The life and work of Saint Gregory Palamas (1296-1359) are connected with the official acknowledgement of the hesychasm by Orthodoxy and its importance in the life of the Church. Saint Gregory Palamas was the theologian of the uncreated energies, or the theologian of the grace. He synthesized the scriptural and the patristic teachings about the view of the uncreated light as a lasting testimony for the following centuries and defined the hesychasm as a fundamental teaching of the Orthodox Church about the deification of man through the divine grace or through the uncreated light […]. Saint Venerable Paisios of Neamț (1722-1794) represents, in the 18th century, the third stage of the hesychastic revival in the history of the Orthodox Church. Among his works of the Orthodox spirituality also ranges On the Prayer of Mind. Very often, Saint Paisios felt obliged to defend the work of the ceaseless prayer – the very base of the hesychasm – speaking about “the teaching of our Holy Fathers who, with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit given to them by God, instruct us in this divine prayer of mind, according the power of the Holy Scriptures” […].
