Summary: The prayer is man’s conversation with God. Nothing can replace the prayer. It is a source of communion and communication of a christian’s life. As a presence and action of the divine grace in man, the prayer brings on consolation, peace and joy. Without prayer, there is neither Church nor authentic christian life. Saint Symeon had the clearest and the most determined influence over the Orthodox spirituality. He is one of the most read authors on Mount Athos, very taken to by the theologians or Slav spirituality, and the manuscripts of the translation into Romanian language date back to about the end of the 18th century. We can find in his writings full pages dedicated to prayer, all of them being put into particularly beautiful poetic words. His own experience, as well as his writings bring forward the importance of seeing the divine uncreated light as an action of the grace, prayer and spiritual vigilance which he recommends for an authentic spiritual life. Saint Symeon does not write treatises on prayer, but he puts it first into practice under the guidance of his spiritual director, Venerable Symeon the Pious, and when he is twenty of age, he is favored with seeing the divine light, as a first spiritual experience. In 979, he becomes hegumen of Saint Mammas Monastery, where he renews the spiritual life, urging the monastics on a more profound inclination for incessant prayer, spiritual vigilance and repentance, as an activity recommended in his catechetical writings.
