Abstract: Părintele Costică Popa s-a născut la data de 25 martie 1925, în localitatea Beceni, din județul Buzău, într-o familie de oameni gospodari, tatăl său fiind primar al acestei comune. După absolvirea Seminarului Teologic Ortodox din Buzău și a Facultății de Teologie Ortodoxă din București, în ziua de 2 noiembrie 1946, vrednicul de pomenire ierarh Antim Angelescu, Episcopul Buzăului, l-a hirotonit preot pe seama Parohiei Gura Dimienii, în Episcopia Buzăului, unde a slujit timp de șapte ani, după care, forțat de regimul ateu, fiind etichetat, din cauza originii „nesănătoase”, ca fiu de chiabur, a fost nevoit să-și părăsească locurile natale. A fost primit în Mitropolia Olteniei în anul 1953, fiind numit preot slujitor la Catedrala Mitropolitană din Craiova de către Înaltpreasfințitul Părinte Firmilian Marin, Mitropolitul Olteniei, și angajat în Administrația eparhială.

Summary: Message of condolences sent at the funeral service of Father Costică Demetriu Popa, priest at the „Sfântul Spiridon” Church – Old, Sector`s 4th Deanery from Capital, held on February 21st, 2024, at the „Sfântul Ilie” Church – Rahova, Sector`s 4th Deanery of Bucharest. Rev. Fr. Costică Demetriu Popa was the first Romanian Orthodox priest missionary in Latin America. He served there for more than four decades, succeeding in founding a parish in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, dedicated to the saints Emperors Constantine and Helen, and raising a wooden church in the Maramureș style, consecrated in 1999. Fr. Costică Popa also served occasionally in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Panama, being a true missionary of the Orthodoxy in South America and an authentic model of the diaspora priest who has dedicated his entire life to the Church and his neighbor. For his dedication, he was twice rewarded with the highest award of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Patriarchal Cross, conferred by Patriarchs Justinian Marina and Teoctist Arăpașu. His Eminence José Alí Alí Lebrún Moratinos, Archbishop of Caracas, conferred him the honorary title of Monsignor. He was a member of the Council of Historical Churches on behalf of the Romanian Orthodox Church. For his ministry, he received the title of Honorary Fellow of the „Stephen the Great” Foundation in Chicago, conferred by His Eminence Archbishop Nicolae, and on April 10th, 2003 he received the National Order „Faithful Service” in the rank of Knight from the Romanian Presidency.
