Abstract: În prezentul articol, Părintele Dumitru Stăniloae pornind de la afirmația lui Hans-Joachim Schulz, care vorbește despre o trăire duhovnicească, a iconarilor, a prezenţei lui Dumnezeu reflectată din prototipurile reprezentate în icoanele lor, face o analiză a picturii realizate de pictorul monah Gheorghe Ciobanu între anii 1980—1983 la Biserica Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul din cartierul Ferentari – Bucureşti. Părintele Gheorghe Ciobanu a imprimat picturii tradiţionale un caracter viu şi creator, urmând exemplul iconarilor din secolele XIV-XV din Imperiul bizantin şi din alte vreo trei secole de după aceea din ţările care au moştenit această tradiţie, dovedind astfel că se poate face teologie creatoare nu numai scriind, ci şi pictând.

Summary: In the present paper, Father Dumitru Stăniloae starts from the statement of Hans-Joachim Schulz, who speaks of the spiritual experience of icon painters, and of God’s presence reflected in the prototypes of their icons. He undertakes an analysis of the painting works conducted by monk painter Gheorghe Ciobanu between 1980-1983 at Saint John the Baptist church in Ferentari neighbourhood – Bucharest. The reverend Father brings about some renewal of church painting, while maintaining tradition at the same time. He lends traditional painting a living, creative character, thus following the example of the icon painters of the 14th-15th century Byzantine Empire, and of the following three centuries in the countries that inherited this tradition. The reverend Father is an icon painter whose works express theology along the lines of our patristic tradition; it is a living and spiritual theology. The reverend Father demonstrates that one can theologize creatively not only by means of writing, but also by means of painting.
