Proclamarea oficială a Anului omagial şi comemorativ 2017 în Patriarhia Română/The official proclamation of the 2017 as Solemn and Commemorative Year in the Romanian Patriarchate

On the first day of the year - 01 January 2017, after the Te Deum service, His Beatitude Daniel, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, officially proclaimed 2017 as Solemn Year of Holy Icons, Iconographers and Church Painters and Commemorative Year of Patriarch Justinian and of the Defenders of Orthodoxy during Communism. His Grace Varlaam Ploieșteanul, Patriarchal Vicar Bishop and Secretary of the Holy Synod al Romanian Orthodox Church, read out the official proclamation. In his address following the proclamation of Year 2017 in the Romanian Patriarchate, the Patriarch of Romania spoke to the faithful present in the Patriarchal Cathedral about the importance of venerating the holy icons. The icon exhorts us to worship Christ, just as the Holy Eucharist makes us bearers of Christ. Confessing the Orthodox faith is the purpose of venerating the holy icons. The holy icons call us to saintliness, to communion, to love for Christ’s Church of all the times, to safeguarding and preserving liturgical unity. Under the communist regime, very many clergy members as well as laypersons were persecuted because they had confessed their faith. They, together with their grandparents and parents who had taught them the Christian faith, will be remembered during the current year. Honoring those who suffered for the sake of Christ during the communist atheistic regime, so hostile to the Church, is not only a moral duty, but also a source of inspiration, as in harsh times hundreds of priests were tortured and imprisoned, but never abjured their faith. Many laypersons also suffered because they had confessed their Christian faith. All these confessors
of Orthodoxy under communism will be remembered with piety, respect and admiration in the new year.

His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel prayed for the rest of the soul of the worthy of remembrance Patriarch Justinian, who pastored the Romanian Orthodox Church for almost three decades, during a troublesome period in the life of Romanian Orthodoxy. Justinian’s patriarchate coincided with the fierce persecutions of the Church under the atheistic regime of communism. He tried with much courage, balance, diplomacy and tenacity to defend the Church from systematic blows of the political power, choosing the path of a powerful resistance sometimes disguised under a speech “favourable” to communist leaders. He opposed seriously to the abuse and interference of the state party in the life of the Church and to its attempts to turn the Church into a powerless institution, Patriarch Daniel said referring to his predecessor. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel addressed the faithful present Saturday at Radu Voda Monastery, where Patriarch Justinian Marina was laid to rest. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel officiated a Memorial Service for the rest of the soul of the third Patriarch of Romania, Justinian Marina. His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest, celebrated the Divine Liturgy prior to the memorial service. We express our gratitude to the memory of this worthy Archpastor of Romanian Orthodoxy, who loved Christ’s Church with limitless love and succeeded with wisdom and sacrifice to defend, to keep and to pass on the eternal values of our ancestral faith, Patriarch Daniel said. In his speech, Patriarch Daniel focused on the sacrificial life of Patriarch Justinian and recalled his virtues and efforts that turned him into a model to be followed by all the ministrants of Christ’s Church. For us today, hierarchs, clergy and faithful, his pastoral, missionary, spiritual, cultural and social activities for the profit of the Romanian Orthodox Church represent a luminous and inspiring model of fidelity and service to our Saviour Jesus Christ and His Church, the Patriarch added.

Părintele Arhimandrit Arsenie Papacioc, un stâlp neclintit al credinţei în vremuri de furtună/ Archimandrite Arsenie Papacioc, a pillar of the faith in harsh times - Arhim. Vasile Miron

Keywords: elder, spiritual director, confessor, adviser, endurance, prayer, shepherd

Archimandrite Arsenie Papacioc was one of the most luminous figures of Romanian monasticism. He shone by his words, deeds and exemplary spiritual life under the atheist dictatorship (1946-1990), a time of great tribulations and sufferings for our ancestral Orthodox Church, when atehist communists persecuted cruelly and mercilessly the mystical clergy – that is, the true shepherds of the souls, the fervent preachers of the Gospel and the genuine adherents to the life in Christ. One of these champions of the faith, who withstood persecutions heroically and endured with martyric courage and patience the horrors and atrocities of the communist regime, was Father Arsenie Papacioc. He was not intimidated and daunted by the inhumane terror, terrible tortures and humiliations inflicted by the atheist state’s repressive apparatus; on the contrary, he endured the long years of detention with great calm and spiritual optimism, accepting like a martyr all dramatic hardships and all the terrifying physical and psychological tortures and traumas, aimed to extermination.
After his release from prison, Father Arsenie was moved from one monastery to another, at the orders of the atheist authorities, in order to be supervised by the secret services (Securitate) as effectively and systematically as possible. However, he never feared his persecutors but, on the contrary, he firmly continued and sustained his noble mission. Wherever he worked as a priest, he proved to be an outstanding, loyal servant of the Church, an exceptional missionary, a wise spiritual director and a great healer of the souls, propagating the light of the Orthodox faith, of Christian piety and living „in spirit and in truth” (John 4, 24).
Taking the Holy Scripture and the writings of the Holy Fathers as guidelines for his sacramental and pastoral life and activity, he toiled in the Lord’s field zealously and diligently, striving to correct people’s wrongdoings and bad habits, and to plant in their hearts the fruitful seed of the divine teachings, and guiding the souls that thirst for truth along the path of repentance and salvation.
His most fruitful apostolic and missionary work was conducted over his last 35 years of life at St Mary Monastery in Techirghiol (Constanţa county), where he abundantly proved his gifts and talent as a celebrant priest, a preacher and an experienced confessor: he comforted those in distress, directed the wayward to return to the path of God’s commandments, and provided healing for the spiritual wounds of those who eagerly awaited his useful advice, fatherly guidance and edifying words to comfort and to deliver them from the abyss of sin and iniquity. His sermons were warm, edifying and convincing, because they stemmed from his pure faith. The multitude of believers perceived his spiritual warmth and his disciples were guided and inwardly transformed by the power and grace working through his teachings, which demonstrates that he fulfilled his calling. All those who met him remember him as a teacher of the faith, a great confessor and a true spiritual director of our times.

Multa bucurie a cerului pentru pocăința ferventă a păcătoșilor Meditationes e Sanctis Patribus/ The Abundant Joy in Heaven Over Sinners’ Fervent Repentance. Meditationes e Sanctis Patribus - Pr. Dr. Liviu Petcu

Keywords: Repentance, fervent, sinners, abundant, joy, Heaven.

Regardless of much we would write and talk about God and the multiple revelation of His infinite and unconditional love in our lives, the topic would remain inexhaustible. This article is intended to be an assertion of the loving calls of All-Merciful God to those who do not know Him and, consequently, do not love Him, to respond to His love with love, to return to the true nature of man by discovering Him and His love, in other words to return home. Repentance for sins and, implicitly, love for God is man’s response to God’s love for him. Repentance takes place as a break with everything that has happened before, it focuses on the present and leads to a new beginning. There is much joy in
heaven over the sinner who repents as our Saviour Himself assured us (Lk. 15:7). God loves all of us not only because we are good, devoted or because we deserve His love; He has loved us since the beginning, unconditionally, commending His love for us ‘in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us’ (Romans 5:8). He wants us to turn back to Him, because only this way we may become the recipients of His gifts. The author does not intend to exhaust the topic proposed, to be thoroughgoing, but merely illustrative. He approaches the foolishness for the divine love and the fact that the multitude of man’s sins does not exceed God’s love for him and eventually emphasizes, as far as possible, the unutterable joy of ‘heaven’ over the fervent repentance of sinners, starting from the parables in the New Testament about the lost sheep, the lost drachma and the prodigal son.

O pictură bisericească contemporană, un comentariu îmbogăţit al dogmelor ortodoxe/Contemporary Church painting providing an enhanced commentary on Orthodox dogmas - Pr. prof.

In the present paper, Father Dumitru Stăniloae starts from the statement of Hans-Joachim Schulz, who speaks of the spiritual experience of icon painters, and of God’s presence reflected in the prototypes of their icons. He undertakes an analysis of the painting works conducted by monk painter Gheorghe Ciobanu between 1980-1983 at Saint John the Baptist church in Ferentari neighbourhood – Bucharest. The reverend Father brings about some renewal of church painting, while maintaining tradition at the same time. He lends traditional painting a living, creative character, thus following the example of the icon painters of the 14th-15th century Byzantine Empire, and of the following three centuries in the countries that inherited this tradition. The reverend Father is an icon painter whose works express theology along the lines of our patristic tradition; it is a living and spiritual theology. The reverend Father demonstrates that one can theologize creatively not only by means of writing, but also by means of painting.

Pr. prof.
