An omagial al educației religioase a tineretului creștin ortodox

His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel prayed for the rest of the soul of the worthy of remembrance Patriarch Justinian, who pastored the Romanian Orthodox Church for almost three decades, during a troublesome period in the life of Romanian Orthodoxy. Justinian’s patriarchate coincided with the fierce persecutions of the Church under the atheistic regime of communism. He tried with much courage, balance, diplomacy and tenacity to defend the Church from systematic blows of the political power, choosing the path of a powerful resistance sometimes disguised under a speech “favourable” to communist leaders. He opposed seriously to the abuse and interference of the state party in the life of the Church and to its attempts to turn the Church into a powerless institution, Patriarch Daniel said referring to his predecessor. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel addressed the faithful present Saturday at Radu Voda Monastery, where Patriarch Justinian Marina was laid to rest. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel officiated a Memorial Service for the rest of the soul of the third Patriarch of Romania, Justinian Marina. His Grace Timotei of Prahova, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest, celebrated the Divine Liturgy prior to the memorial service. We express our gratitude to the memory of this worthy Archpastor of Romanian Orthodoxy, who loved Christ’s Church with limitless love and succeeded with wisdom and sacrifice to defend, to keep and to pass on the eternal values of our ancestral faith, Patriarch Daniel said. In his speech, Patriarch Daniel focused on the sacrificial life of Patriarch Justinian and recalled his virtues and efforts that turned him into a model to be followed by all the ministrants of Christ’s Church. For us today, hierarchs, clergy and faithful, his pastoral, missionary, spiritual, cultural and social activities for the profit of the Romanian Orthodox Church represent a luminous and inspiring model of fidelity and service to our Saviour Jesus Christ and His Church, the Patriarch added.

Rolul educativ-moral al predării Religiei în școală/The educational-moral role of Religion teaching in school
Arhim. conf. univ. dr. Vasile Miron

Keywords: religion, school, science, Christian teaching, spiritual life

School education studies all branches of science. The exact sciences investigate the material world, attempting to formulate the biological laws governing it, and providing empirical arguments derived from the experience of these laws accessible to the senses. Humanities are centered on man, the millennia-old human history and man’s philosophical, artistic and literary output. Unlike scientific training, religion provides a different approach on the world, according to a vertical dimension in whose absence knowledge and life would be incomplete. Religion is defined as man’s relation to God – the relation between creature and Creator. Religion presents human destiny, the meaning of human life and eternal existence – everlasting life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Because man is both body and soul, religion gives true meaning to human life, cultivating the spirit of communion between man and God, according to the words of the Saviour: „Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them” (John 14:21). Religion presents spiritual life not on an empirical basis, as the transcendent things cannot be perceived by bodily senses. Knowledge of the spiritual world is grounded in the divine Revelation provided by the Holy Scripture and the Holy Tradition.
The Christian faith and doctrine are learned during childhood years, for our Saviour Jesus Christ Himself called the children, saying: „Let the children come to Me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these” (Luke 19, 14). Religious education aims to shape a Christian attitude and improve pupils’ character, to become enlightened people of sincere faith and fear of God, able to discern right from wrong, values from lack of values or distorted ones. Religion teaches children to love each other, obey their parents, respect their teachers, strive to improve and pursue justice and truth. This complex formative process begins before school age, when the children say their first words and their mothers teach them how to kneel and join their hands in prayer. This process continues in school when, even before learning how to read and write children direct their prayer to God, then it deepens over the years as religious knowledge is enriched, Christian virtues are exercised and examples of pure Christian life are followed. Thus religious education completes children’s personality. It aims at cultivating the spirit, educating the will, enlightening the mind, achieving harmony of body and soul and practicing the Christian values and virtues: love, humbleness, moderation, patience, forgiveness, sincerity, etc. All these virtues grow from the living root of the faith, which is the essential prerequisite of the human existence.

The place of Father Dumitru  Stăniloae in the Romanian theology, and in the contemporary Orthodox theology
- Pr. Dr. Ciprian Apetrei

KeywordsRev. Father Dumitru Stăniloae, Dogmatics, Contemporan Orthodox theology, cataphatic and apophatic theology, Ecumenical dialog

Father Stăniloae opens to the world of today and to the ecumenical dialogue the expression of the Orthodox faith, defining an Orthodox theology of the world, and specifying the social and cultural dimension of the Creation. If he reads attentively over his theology, the man of today will find out that Father Dumitru Stăniloae has reinstated the theology in its highest place among the ways of knowledge. He found the theology of his time was not able to keep balance between the speculations about what is God in His essence and energies, and the analyse and the interpretation of the historical and cultural context, i.e. the ways God intervenes in men`s life a story. Thus, a separation between theology and economy has been performed, as well as between the transcendental Trinity and the immanent Trinity, between Divining, or God`s essence, and His plan (oeconomy) through His active energies. Father Stăniloae makes from the “knowledge of God” a major chapter of his Orthodox Dogmatic Theology, very positively stating that the knowledge of God about Himself is not to be separated from His knowledge about the creatures. God is one and unchanged both in the mystery of His innaccessive being, and His historical and visible manifestations. The doxology of His transcendental existence and the apology of His presence within creation and history are two aspects of the knowledge of God, One and Unchained in both forms. Father Stăniloae never denied the role of theology as a conceptual tool for systematizing the revealed christian doctrine, but he never insisted upon this chapter. On the other hand, being consistent in his theories about the knowledge of God, Father Stăniloae discussed at length upon the subject of the kataphatic theology, i.e. the discursive, affirmative theology based on rational knowledge, and the apophatic theology, i.e. the contemplative, negative theology based on superrational knowledge.

O pictură bisericească contemporană, un comentariu îmbogăţit al dogmelor ortodoxe/Contemporary Church painting providing an enhanced commentary on Orthodox dogmas - Pr. prof.

In the present paper, Father Dumitru Stăniloae starts from the statement of Hans-Joachim Schulz, who speaks of the spiritual experience of icon painters, and of God’s presence reflected in the prototypes of their icons. He undertakes an analysis of the painting works conducted by monk painter Gheorghe Ciobanu between 1980-1983 at Saint John the Baptist church in Ferentari neighbourhood – Bucharest. The reverend Father brings about some renewal of church painting, while maintaining tradition at the same time. He lends traditional painting a living, creative character, thus following the example of the icon painters of the 14th-15th century Byzantine Empire, and of the following three centuries in the countries that inherited this tradition. The reverend Father is an icon painter whose works express theology along the lines of our patristic tradition; it is a living and spiritual theology. The reverend Father demonstrates that one can theologize creatively not only by means of writing, but also by means of painting.

Pr. prof.
